Title Kinnery Shah, Age 16
Description I have lived in San Jose for nine years. Prior to that, I lived in Massachusetts and Maryland. My parents immigrated to the United States from India. We speak English and Gujrati at home. It is nice to speak another language in addition to English because it helps me connect with my parents' culture and give me the ability to master other languages with more efficiency and ease.

Cultural customs and family traditions have, for the most part, been preserved in our family. We celebrate religious festivals, such as Navrati and Diwali. We also perform pujas, especially on holy days. Bharantanatyam, the type of dance I do, especially helps me stay in touch with out traditions due to its deep roots in Hinduism. The only major shift from my childhood to today has been a decrease in how often we go to the temple. However, since we still make an effort to relate to our cultural past, the impact of that is not huge.
