The sumptuous Hotel Del Monte was built by railroad magnate Charles Crocker and his Pacific Improvement Company in 1880. The original hotel burned in 1887; the reconstructed hotel was almost an exact duplicate of the first. The luxury hotel attracted visitors from throughout California and around the world.
