Louis Prevost house |
Description |
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Prevost on the porch of their home on Prevost Street, San Jose. Copy of "Nostalgia" article attached to back of photo reads: "In 1866 this house occupied a prominent place in Louis Prevost's nursery grounds, better known as Prevost's Gardens. Prevost, native of France, came to California in the Gold Rush of 1849. On arriving in San Jose soon afterward, he acquired a tract of rich land bounded by Guadalupe River, a line just north of San Carlos Street, and what is now Spencer Avenue and West William Street. Here he introduced silk worms into California and planted thousands of mulberry trees whos leaves provided the worms' natural food. By the mid 1860's he was recognized as California's leading authority of silk culture. Prevost died in 1869, about three years after and Mrs. Prevost posed for this photo." |
