Description |
Small album containing a typed description and photographs of the U.S. Navy (De Forest) Station near San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Station at South Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Typed information sheet: The U.S. Navy (De Forest) Station, located near the city of San Juan, Porto Rico [sic] call letter SA (now NAU) this station's power was 35 KW 60 Cycles. The three towers were 210 feet high, set triangular, 300 feet apart, the antenna had three fans of 15 wires each, 300 feet long, the ground plate was copper laid in an old moat, used in the Spanish time in fortification. The 1st photo shows the station and power house. The 2nd photo shows the engine room, a Horsby-Akroyd Oil Engine, 50 HP 220 RPM belted to a Bullock AC 60 Cycle, 115 Volt generator, the small DC generator is used to store batteries. The 3rd photo shows the operating room. At left on the wall is the oil relay key, on the table the antenna switch, sending key, receiving set, consisting of a pancake tuner, electrolytic detector, head phones. Through the door can be seen the tuning helix, spark muffler box. The 4th photo shows the spark by its own light. The 5th photo shows Mr. Irodell, one of Dr. De Forest experts receiving Key West, for the first time in 1905. The 6th photo shows the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Station, located at South Wellfleet, Mass. (Cape Cod). This station was the first high power trans-Atlantic station in the U.S. The towers were 200 feet high, set 300 feet apart, forming a square, the antenna was Z form, 20 wires, 1000 feet long, a counterpois was used as a ground 15 feet above the earth, the power of this station was 45 KW 60 cycles. The call letter WCC. The 7th photo shows the engine room, a Horsby-Akroyd Oil Engine, 50 HP 220 RPM, a Westinghouse AC generator, 60 cycles, 2200 voltes, 45 KW. The 8th photo shows the high voltage transmitting room, the voltage was stepped up to 22000 volts, the spark was a revolving disc discharger, coupling transformer, tuning helix, condensors, and spark gap, are shown.
