World War II United States Army Medical wool, dress uniform jacket. With patches on sleeves and over front pocket including: --Red, white, and blue Army Services Forces 1941 patch on left shoulder. --7 Service Bars on the lower left sleeve. One straight stripe was awarded for each 6 months of service overseas. --2 Service Stripes below bars on lower left sleeve awarded for each reinlistment of 3 years. --Staff Sergeant rank patch on both shoulders --44th Infantry patch on left shoulder --Wreath patch on right sleeve denotes a member of a distinguished unit. --Discharge Pin & Patch aka "Ruptured Duck" The Discharge Pin or Patch was issued to discharged soldiers and was worn above the right breast pocket. The main purpose of this patch was it allowed the GI to travel home while wearing his uniform and not be ordered around by an officer. |

From the Plattsburgh Press Republican, Plattsburg, N.Y. - Tuesday, March 27, 1945: "T-S Roland H. Willett, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.O. Willett of 52 Charlotte Street, is enjoying a furlough at home after returning from 33 months of service overseas. He enlisted in the Medical Corps in January 1942 and served in Iceland, England, France, and Germany, having participated in two major battles." From the Plattsburgh Press Republican, Plattsburg, N.Y. - Monday, May 28, 1945: "T/S Roland H. Willett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Willet of 5 Charlotte Street is at the Camp Butner, N.C. Redistribution Station awaiting new assignment. He served 34 months in the European theatre of operations as a medical aid man. He holds the European Theatre ribbon with one battle star." Willett was born April 8, 1915 and died April 26, 1990. |
