One of the Sargent Brothers who owned the Juristac Ranch in Gilroy, J. P. Sargent was born in New Hampshire on 11 February 1825. By 1849 Sargent had "gold fever" and moved to California with two brothers whereupon the three gentlemen bought stock from immigrants. Sargent moved to the Santa Clara Valley in 1853 where he and his two brothers bought 25,000 acres in the San Joaquin Valley and 24,000 acres in Monterey County.
